How Long Does DLT Registration Take? A Stage-by-Stage Guide

Rohit Jadhav
Nexcomm Team

DLT registration typically takes a few days to a couple of weeks from application to your first live campaign. The Principal Entity ID usually arrives in two to five days, a header in one to three days, and each template is reviewed separately, often within two working days. Clean documents and matching names are what keep it short.

Nobody likes an open-ended wait before a campaign. If you have a festival offer, an exam-result alert or a launch date, you want to know how long DLT registration takes and what can slow it down. This guide breaks the timeline into stages, gives the figures we work with and shows where the delays hide. It is part of our main guide to DLT registration in India. For help with the set-up, Nexcomm's bulk SMS service includes registration support. More guides sit under Compliance & Regulations.

How long does each stage take?

StageTypical timeWhat decides it
Principal Entity (PE) approval2 to 5 daysDocument quality, name match, operator queue
Header (sender ID) approval1 to 3 daysWhether the name matches your business
Template approvalOften within 2 working days per templateCategory, variables, wording
URL whitelistingVaries by portalWhether the link is registered and clean

The PE and header figures are the ones Nexcomm's team works with. The template figure comes from a September 2025 MediaNama report on how template validation works, which put the total turnaround for approval or rejection at two working days. Treat all of them as typical, and expect operators to differ.

How long until the first campaign can go out?

If your documents are clean and the names match, a realistic plan is one to two weeks from application to a live campaign. That is our own estimate, built from the stage figures above, not a published guarantee. The stages run one after another: you cannot register a header before you have a Principal Entity ID, and you cannot register a template before you have a header to attach it to. Plan the order, and apply for several templates at once to save time.

What slows DLT registration down?

  • Name mismatches. The business name differs between PAN, address proof and form.
  • Unclear or incomplete scans. Blurry or cropped documents are returned.
  • Missing authorisation. An unsigned letter or no ID for the signatory.
  • A header that does not relate to the business. It is rejected, and you start again.
  • Template rejections. See what to do when a DLT template is rejected.
  • Waiting on the signatory. A director who is out of reach holds up the letter.

How can you speed it up?

  1. Collect every document first, using the checklist in DLT registration for a proprietorship or for a private limited company.
  2. Check that names and addresses match exactly across documents.
  3. Ask the signatory to be available the day you apply.
  4. Apply for the header and the first templates together once the PE ID arrives.
  5. Write templates to the rules the first time. See DLT template variables.
  6. Do not wait for the last week before a campaign. Start early.

Also check what you will pay while you wait. Our guide to DLT registration charges lists the operator fees as of 25 October 2026.

A worked example (hypothetical)

A pharmacy chain in Indore plans a refill-reminder service for the start of next month. This is an invented example. It applies on a Monday with clean documents and gets its Principal Entity ID on Thursday. It applies for a header and three templates the same day. The header is approved by Saturday, two templates are approved within two working days, and the third is returned for a missing opt-out line. The corrected template is approved the following Tuesday. The first reminders go out on the Wednesday, nine days after the application. Starting two weeks ahead left room for the one rejection.

Common mistakes when planning the timeline

  • Starting the week of the campaign. There is no room for a rejection.
  • Treating typical timings as promises. They are not.
  • Applying for templates before the header exists. They need a header to attach to.
  • Leaving approval of the authorisation letter to the last minute. The signatory may be away.
  • Submitting one template at a time. Batch them.

Frequently asked questions

How long does DLT registration take?

Typically two to five days for the Principal Entity ID and one to three days for a header, with templates reviewed separately. With clean documents, a first campaign can be live in roughly one to two weeks. Operators differ.

How long does DLT template approval take?

Often within two working days per template, according to a 2025 report on how validation works. Rejections add the time it takes to correct and resubmit.

Why is my DLT registration taking so long?

The usual causes are mismatched names, unclear scans, a missing authorisation letter or a header that does not relate to the business. Ask the portal for the reason and correct it in one go.

Can DLT registration be done in one day?

We would not plan on it. The stages depend on operator review, and each has its own queue. Plan for days, not hours.

Can I send SMS while registration is pending?

Not commercial SMS through the normal route. Messages need a registered header and an approved template, so wait for approval before launching a campaign.
