IPL Campaign Marketing SMS: Ideas, Examples and Tips

An IPL campaign marketing SMS works when it ties a real offer to match days, goes to customers who opted in and avoids implying any link with the league or a team. Use short, time-bound messages, plan around the fixture list once it is out, and never promote betting or real-money games.

For about two months, a large part of the country plans its evenings around a match. Restaurants fill up, delivery apps get busy and screens go on in living rooms. That makes a cricket season a useful hook for businesses that serve evenings and weekends. This guide shows how to plan an IPL campaign marketing SMS without stepping into trademark or legal trouble. It is part of our seasonal marketing series, which starts with the Diwali SMS campaign guide. For match-day conversations and offers on WhatsApp, see our WhatsApp marketing service page.

Which businesses can use IPL season marketing?

Restaurants, cafes, food delivery kitchens, sports bars where permitted, home electronics and TV retailers, mobile and broadband providers, sports stores, gaming cafes, event venues and local clubs. Anyone whose customers watch matches together or buy something for the evening can build an offer. If your business has no natural link to cricket, skip it. A forced tie-in reads badly.

When should you start?

Before the season opens. The fixture list and the start date are announced by the organisers, so check them each year and plan from them. Prepare templates and lists a few weeks ahead, because template approval takes time, and keep a few "ready" messages for match-day moments such as a final or a local team's game.

Our guide to wedding season marketing SMS covers a season that runs through the winter, and the off season travel marketing guide shows how to use an event to fill a quiet period.

What can you say without infringing anything?

Talk about the match and the evening, not the brand. The league name and team names and logos are usually protected trademarks. Do not use official logos, do not suggest that you are an official partner and do not use team names in a way that implies sponsorship. A line such as "Watch the match with us" is safer than a line that borrows a team's name. If you want to use any names or marks, take advice, since the rules on trademarks and "ambush marketing" are specific.

The same caution applies to players' names and images. You need permission to use them in an advertisement. A message about your own offer needs none of this.

What messages work?

Short, timed and local. Examples with placeholders (match them to your registered template):

  • Restaurant: "Watch tonight's match at [Restaurant]. Big screen, family combos from Rs [amount]. Reserve: [number]."
  • Delivery: "Match-day snack box from [Kitchen]. Order before [time] for delivery by the first ball: [link]."
  • Electronics: "Upgrade your TV before the season. [Benefit] on [products] until [date] at [Store]."
  • Venue: "Live screening at [Venue] on [date]. Passes: [link]."
  • Timing note: "[Business] will close early on [date] because of the match. Open from [time] on [date]."

What must you avoid?

Do not promote betting, fantasy stakes or real-money games. The legal position on online games has changed more than once and is a specialist area, so take legal advice if your business is anywhere near it. Do not encourage excessive drinking. Do not make claims about the match result or players. And do not promise that your product will "make your team win".

Who should you message?

Customers who agreed to receive offers from you, through a registered sender and approved templates. Under TRAI's regulations, promotional messages go to people who have not blocked that category unless you hold explicit consent, and they carry an opt-out. On WhatsApp, Meta's policy requires opt-in and respect for requests to stop. Segment by what customers like: families, office groups, solo viewers, or people near a particular outlet.

How often should you send?

Sparingly. Choose three or four moments in the season: the opening, a local-interest match, the playoffs and the final. A message before every match turns into noise within a week. If you use a match-day offer, send it a few hours before, not at midnight.

For businesses that also celebrate local festivals, remember that a season can overlap with other events. Our guide to the Ganesh Chaturthi marketing campaign covers a festival plan you can adapt.

A worked example (hypothetical)

A family restaurant with a large TV room has 3,000 customer numbers. This is an invented example. Two weeks before the season it sends an SMS to the 2,100 who agreed to offers, announcing reservations for group tables. During the season it sends three more messages, each tied to a big match and each sent in the afternoon, with a callback number. It never uses a team's name or logo. After the final it sends a thank-you message with a coupon for the following month. The restaurant tracks reservations by message and finds that the afternoon send for the playoffs filled the most tables.

Common mistakes in IPL campaigns

  • Using official logos or team names. It implies sponsorship.
  • Promoting betting or real-money games. A legal minefield.
  • Messaging before every match. Noise.
  • Sending late at night. People are watching, not reading.
  • Forcing a tie-in. If cricket is irrelevant to you, skip it.
  • Offers with no end date. State the dates.
  • Buying numbers. You cannot show consent.

Frequently asked questions

Can a business use the IPL name in an SMS offer?

It is safer to talk about the match or the cricket season without using the league's name or logos, because they are protected marks and using them can imply sponsorship. If you want to use them, take legal advice first.

When should I send match-day offers?

A few hours before the match, not late at night. Pick the matches that matter to your customers, such as a local team's game, the playoffs and the final, rather than every match.

Can I send IPL offers to customers who have not opted in?

Promotional messages need a registered sender and approved template, and go to people who have not blocked that category unless you hold explicit consent, with an opt-out. Do not use bought lists, since you cannot show consent.

Is WhatsApp better for IPL campaigns?

For images, reservations and questions, yes, for customers who opted in. SMS is better for short reminders and reaches more people. Many businesses use both.

What should I avoid in cricket-season marketing?

Avoid betting and real-money gaming promotions, official logos, claims about match results and anything that encourages excessive drinking. Keep to your own offer and the evening.
