A good New Year wishes message for customers is short, names your business, says thank you and adds one useful fact such as new timings. Send it to customers who agreed to hear from you, avoid midnight, and keep it personal. Wording differs by business type, so match the tone to how your customers know you.

Search for New Year greetings and you find thousands of copy-paste lines. They are fine for friends, but a customer who hears from a business wants something else: a sincere thanks and a reason the message is worth reading. This guide gives you wording by business type, a few tone rules and the practical checks for sending. For campaign planning, offers and timing, see our guide to a New Year SMS campaign for business. The series starts with the Diwali SMS campaign guide and is collected under seasonal marketing. To send greetings and replies on WhatsApp, see our WhatsApp marketing service page.
What makes a New Year wishes message work for customers?
Three things: it sounds like your business, it is short, and it gives the customer something. That something can be a thank-you, a date, a timing change or a reminder. A greeting with nothing in it looks like every other forward on the phone that morning.
Keep to one or two sentences. Write the way you speak to customers across the counter. If your shop is warm and informal, a stiff corporate line will feel wrong.
Which wording suits which business?
Use these as starting points and replace the placeholders. Match your final text to the template you register.
- Retail shop: "Happy New Year from all of us at [Shop]. Thank you for shopping with us. We open at [time] on [date]."
- Clinic or lab: "[Clinic] wishes you good health in [year]. Our timings from [date]: [timings]. Book: [number]."
- School or coaching institute: "Happy New Year to you and your family from [Institute]. Classes resume on [date]."
- Restaurant: "Happy New Year! Thank you for dining with [Restaurant]. We look forward to seeing you in [year]."
- Service business (repairs, salon, gym): "Wishing you a happy [year] from [Business]. Book your first slot of the year: [number]."
- B2B supplier: "Season's greetings from [Company]. Thank you for your business in [year]. Our office is closed on [date]."
Notice that none of them says "wishing you all the happiness in the world". Specific thanks and specific information carry more warmth than big phrases.
Should the message be in English or a local language?
Use the language your customers use with you. A New Year wish in Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati or Tamil to a customer who speaks that language lands better than a polished English line. Test regional-language messages on a phone before a big send, because they use Unicode and can be split into several message parts.
Is a greeting message promotional?
It depends on the content. Under TRAI's regulations, a promotional message advertises a product or service, must carry an opt-out and goes only to people who have not blocked that category unless the sender holds explicit consent. Mixing promotion into a message turns the whole message promotional. A plain greeting may be classified differently, and so may a message that only tells existing customers about your timings. Ask your provider how your template will be treated, and register it under the right category.
Who should receive it?
Customers who gave their number and agreed to receive messages from you. Do not send to bought lists. On WhatsApp, Meta's policy requires opt-in permission and respect for requests to stop, and you may start a business conversation only with an approved template. A good approach is to send the SMS to everyone eligible and the WhatsApp version only to customers who opted in.
When should you send it?
Not at midnight. Networks are crowded then and messages can be delayed. Send a day or two before, or on the morning of the first working day of the year. Send once. Our guide to festive season SMS marketing explains how to space messages across a run of festivals, and the year-end payment reminder guide covers the dues messages that often go out the same week.
A worked example (hypothetical)
A neighbourhood clinic has 2,500 patient numbers. This is an invented example. The practice sends a short Hindi and English greeting on the morning of the first working day to the 1,800 patients who agreed to updates. It thanks them, gives the new clinic timings and shares one phone number for appointments. It does not offer discounts. A handful of patients reply with thanks, and the clinic's phone line is busier than usual that week. Opt-outs are close to zero, because the message was brief and useful.
Common mistakes in New Year messages
- Using a forwarded greeting. It looks like spam.
- Sending at midnight. Delays and low attention.
- Adding a long offer. It buries the greeting and changes the message category.
- No business name. The customer cannot tell who it is from.
- Wrong language. Use the customer's own.
- Sending to everyone you have a number for. Only those who agreed.
- Sending twice. Once is enough.
Frequently asked questions
What should a business write in a New Year message to customers?
A short thanks, the business name and one useful fact such as new timings or a booking number. Keep it to one or two sentences, in the customer's language, and leave out long offers.
Can I send a New Year wish to all my contacts by SMS?
Only to people who gave you their number for communications from you. The message must go through a registered sender and approved template. Ask your provider whether a plain greeting is treated differently from a promotion.
Is it better to send New Year wishes on WhatsApp or SMS?
SMS reaches more customers. WhatsApp allows pictures and replies but only for people who opted in. Many businesses send SMS to everyone eligible and a richer WhatsApp message to opted-in customers.
When is the best time to send a New Year greeting?
A day or two before, or on the morning of the first working day. Avoid midnight, when networks are busy. Send one message and do not repeat it.
Should I add a discount to a New Year greeting?
Only if you mean it to be an offer, in which case treat it as a promotional message with an opt-out and a clear end date. A pure thank-you is often better received, especially after a season of festive offers.
