Wedding season marketing works best when you reach a couple while they are still choosing vendors, with one clear reason to talk to you. Use short SMS for dates and offers, WhatsApp for photos and quotes to people who have opted in, and send nothing to numbers you cannot trace. Start early, because wedding bookings are made well ahead of the date.

A wedding is one of the few purchases where a family spends on a dozen vendors in one season: jewellers, banquet halls, caterers, decorators, photographers, florists, tailors, travel agents and gift shops. That makes the season an opportunity and a crowd. This guide shares practical wedding season marketing SMS ideas you can adapt. It is part of our seasonal marketing series, which starts with the Diwali SMS campaign guide. If you plan to add WhatsApp to your mix, our WhatsApp marketing service page describes how broadcasts, templates and opt-ins work.
When should wedding vendors start sending messages?
Start before the season, not in it. Families usually decide on key vendors well ahead of the date, so a message that lands when they are choosing is worth more than one sent the week before. Build your list and your templates before the season begins, then send in phases: awareness first, then offers, then availability and reminders.
Your own bookings diary tells you more than any general calendar. Look at when last season's enquiries came in and plan around that. Also check the muhurat dates in your region, because they vary by community and place.
Who should you message?
Your best audience is people who have already shown interest in you: past customers, enquiry forms, walk-in visitors who gave their number, and people who opted in on your website or at an event. Their numbers are traceable, and they know your name.
Do not buy lists of "upcoming brides and grooms". You cannot show the people agreed to hear from you, and the messages tend to land badly. TRAI's regulations treat promotional messages as something delivered to people who have not blocked that category, unless the sender holds explicit consent, and require an opt-out in the message.
Which messages work for which wedding vendor?
Each type of business has a natural message. The examples below use placeholders, so adapt them and match them to your registered template.
- Jewellers: "[Shop name]: bridal collection preview on [date], [time]. Book a private viewing: [number]."
- Banquet halls: "[Hall name] has dates open in [month]. Visit for a hall tour: [number]."
- Caterers: "[Caterer] now taking bookings for [month]. Tasting sessions on [date]. Call [number]."
- Decorators and florists: "See our mandap and stage designs. Photos on WhatsApp: [number]."
- Photographers: "[Studio] has a few dates left in [month]. See our work: [link]."
- Wedding wear: "Our wedding collection is in. Book a fitting: [number]."
Notice that each message offers a next step and a real fact. "Exclusive wedding offer!" tells nobody anything.
How do SMS and WhatsApp fit together?
SMS is good for short facts like a date and a phone number. WhatsApp suits photos, price lists, catalogues and conversations, but only for people who have opted in, and only through approved templates when you start the conversation. Meta's policy asks businesses to have opt-in from recipients and to honour requests to stop. Our guide on festive season SMS marketing compares the two in more detail.
A simple pattern: send an SMS that gives the date and a number, and invite people to message you on WhatsApp for photos. They come to you, they have chosen to talk, and you are not sending media to people who never asked.
How do you write wedding messages that feel personal?
Use the customer's name or the occasion where you have it, and keep the rest short. Mention one specific thing: a date, an item, a hall. Write in the language your customer uses, which may be Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati or another language, not necessarily English. Leave out hype. Families planning a wedding are comparing quotes, and plain information stands out.
Think too about tone. A wedding is a happy time, but it is also stressful. A calm, helpful message from a vendor gets a better response than breathless urgency. If you offer a discount, state its terms clearly and keep to them.
What comes after the wedding season?
Customers you served this season are your best audience for the next one. A thank-you message after the event, a request for a review and an invitation to share your number with friends can all be done with consent. Wedding vendors with a travel angle, such as honeymoon packages, can look ahead to the summer holidays, which we cover in travel season marketing SMS. Retailers who sell to the same families can also plan around big sporting events, as we describe in IPL campaign marketing SMS.
Whatever you plan next, keep the same habits: a clean list, one idea per message and a record of who agreed to hear from you.
What should you track?
Track enquiries, visits, bookings and opt-outs, by message. Add a different phone extension, link or code to each message so you can see which one brought the enquiry. Do not count a read message as a booking. After the season, note which message types and which timing worked, and write them down for next year.
A worked example (hypothetical)
A banquet hall in a mid-sized city wants to fill its winter dates. This is an invented example. It has 1,800 numbers from past events and enquiry forms. It sends an SMS in two languages to 1,200 of them who gave consent, inviting them to a hall tour on a named weekend. It follows up by phone with those who reply. A week before the weekend, a short reminder goes only to the people who said they would come. The hall does not blast the other 600, because it cannot show consent for them, and it asks them to opt in at the tour instead. Fewer messages go out, and nobody complains.
Common mistakes in wedding season marketing
- Starting too late. By the time the season is visible, families have chosen vendors.
- Buying lists of engaged couples. No consent, high complaint risk.
- Vague offers. Name the date, the item and the place.
- English-only messages. Use the family's language.
- Ignoring opt-outs. Honour them straight away.
- Sending photos to people who never asked. Let them ask on WhatsApp.
- No tracking. You cannot improve what you do not measure.
Frequently asked questions
Can a wedding vendor send bulk SMS to customers?
Yes, through a registered sender and approved templates, and subject to the customer's preferences and consent. Promotional messages need an opt-out. Use numbers customers gave you, and keep a record of how and when they did so.
What is the best time to send wedding season SMS?
Before families commit to vendors, which is earlier than most people expect. Within the day, avoid late hours and send when people are likely to read, such as mid-morning or early evening. Check the timing rules that apply to promotional messages with your provider.
Should I use SMS or WhatsApp for wedding enquiries?
Use both for different jobs. SMS carries the date and phone number. WhatsApp is better for photos, catalogues and questions, once the person has opted in. Many vendors use an SMS to invite people to message them on WhatsApp.
Can I send wedding offers to guests or invitees?
Only if they have opted in to hear from you. Being on someone's guest list is not consent to receive your promotions. Collect numbers at your own events, with a clear note about how you will use them.
How many messages is too many?
There is no fixed number. Watch your opt-out rate and your replies. If opt-outs climb or replies fall, you are sending too much or to the wrong people. Two or three useful messages across a season often beat daily reminders.
