New Year SMS Campaign for Business: Ideas and Examples

A New Year SMS campaign for business works when it thanks customers, gives one useful piece of information and keeps any offer secondary. Send to people who agreed to hear from you, use a registered sender and template, and avoid midnight blasts. A short greeting with a clear next step beats a long promotion on a crowded day.

New Year's Day is the noisiest day for greetings in India. Everyone's phone fills with forwards by morning. A business message has to compete with that, and with Christmas offers and year-end sales just before it. This guide shows how to plan a New Year SMS campaign for business that people read instead of delete. It is part of our seasonal marketing series, which starts with the Diwali SMS campaign guide. If you want to add WhatsApp to your plan, our WhatsApp marketing service page explains templates, opt-ins and broadcasts.

Why run a New Year campaign at all?

Because it is a natural moment to speak to customers you have not spoken to in a while. A greeting from a business you actually bought from is welcome. It reminds customers you exist, and it opens a door for a useful message later. The risk is sounding like everyone else, so give the message a job.

The job can be thanks, a service update, a new-year offer or a practical date (new timings, a renewed price list). Pick one.

Who should receive a New Year message?

Customers and contacts who gave you their number and agreed to hear from you. That excludes bought lists, numbers scraped from websites and numbers collected for something unrelated. Under TRAI's regulations, a promotional message goes to people who have not blocked that category unless you hold explicit consent, and it must carry an opt-out. A pure greeting with no offer may be treated differently, so ask your provider how your template will be classified.

Segment lightly. Long-standing customers might get a thank-you. Customers who bought recently might get a service tip. Lapsed customers might get a reason to return.

What should a New Year message say?

Make it short, name your business and offer one next step. Examples with placeholders (match them to your registered template):

  • Thank you: "Thank you for choosing [Business] this year. Wishing you a healthy and happy [year]. Our new timings from [date]: [timings]."
  • Offer: "[Business] wishes you a happy [year]. Enjoy [benefit] until [date]. Details: [link]."
  • Service reminder: "A new year is a good time to service your [item]. Book a slot with [Business]: [number]."
  • Win-back: "We miss you at [Business]. Come back this month and get [benefit]: [link]."

Keep any claim true and any date correct. Do not copy a template from a forward. Messages that look like a chain forward get ignored.

When should you send, and how often?

Do not send at midnight. Networks are congested, messages get delayed and people are busy. Send a day or two before the date, or on the morning of the first working day. Send once. If you have an offer, a second message midway through the offer period is enough.

Also think about the previous weeks. If you have already sent Christmas and year-end offers, a further message on the first of the month can feel like pressure. In that case a plain thank-you is better than another offer. Our guide to festive season SMS marketing covers how to space a run of festive messages, and the year-end payment reminder guide covers the messages that sit alongside them.

How do SMS and WhatsApp work together?

SMS reaches almost everyone. WhatsApp allows images and replies, but only with people who opted in, and only through approved templates when you start the conversation. Meta's policy asks businesses to have opt-in permission and to respect requests to stop. A good pattern is an SMS to everyone eligible, then a WhatsApp message to opted-in customers with a card or catalogue.

A worked example (hypothetical)

A diagnostic lab has 8,000 customer numbers. This is an invented example. It sends a thank-you SMS on the first working day of January to the 5,500 customers who agreed to receive updates, with its new collection timings. The message offers a link to book a health check but does not push it. A separate WhatsApp message with the health-check price list goes to the 900 people who had opted in on WhatsApp. The lab does not message the remaining 2,500 because it cannot show consent, and it asks them to opt in at their next visit. The campaign is small but clean, and the bookings can be traced back to the message that caused them.

Common mistakes in New Year campaigns

  • Sending at midnight. Delivery suffers and nobody reads it.
  • Copying forwarded greetings. They look like spam.
  • Sending too many. One message is enough.
  • Offer buried in a long text. Keep one idea.
  • No sender name. People should know who is writing.
  • No opt-out. Promotions need one.
  • Buying numbers. You cannot show consent.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to send a New Year SMS to customers?

Not at midnight. Send a day or two before, or on the morning of the first working day, at a time people are likely to read. Check any timing rules for promotional messages that your provider applies.

Can I send a New Year greeting to all my contacts?

Only to contacts who gave their number for communications from you. A greeting with an offer counts as promotional. A plain greeting may be classified differently, so ask your provider before relying on that.

Should a New Year message include an offer?

Not necessarily. A thank-you with a useful fact often works better than another discount, especially after a run of festive offers. If you include an offer, keep it short, true and dated.

Is WhatsApp better than SMS for New Year messages?

WhatsApp allows images and conversation, but only for people who opted in. SMS reaches more people. Use SMS as the base and WhatsApp for those who agreed to it.

How many New Year messages should I send?

Usually one, and one follow-up if you have a time-limited offer. Watch opt-outs. If they rise after a send, you are sending too often or to the wrong people.
