Travel Season Marketing SMS: Ideas, Examples and Tips

Travel season marketing SMS works when it reaches past customers and enquirers early, names a real package, date and price range, and gives one easy way to book or ask. Start planning before the school holidays, send in short phases, and use only numbers people gave you for travel updates.

Travel is a considered purchase. Families compare packages, check dates against school and office calendars, and talk it over before booking. Travel season marketing SMS suits that pattern, because a short reminder at the right moment can bring a quiet enquiry back to life. This guide is part of our seasonal marketing series, which starts with the Diwali SMS campaign guide. If you run an agency or tour company, see our bulk SMS for travel agencies page.

When is the travel season, and when should you start?

Peak travel follows the school and festival calendar: summer holidays, Diwali breaks, year-end and long weekends. The right time to message is earlier than the trip, because families plan ahead. Look at your own booking history. If last year's summer bookings came in March, March is your campaign window, not May.

Build a rough calendar for the year and mark the three or four peaks that matter to your kind of customer. A pilgrimage operator, a hill-station hotel and a visa agent have different calendars.

Who should you message?

Start with people who have already dealt with you: past travellers, people who asked for a quote and people who signed up for deals. They know your name and gave you their number. Group them by what they bought or asked about, such as family packages, group tours or short breaks, so the message fits.

Avoid bought lists of "frequent travellers". You cannot show consent, and under TRAI's regulations promotional messages go to people who have not blocked that category unless you hold explicit consent, and carry an opt-out.

Which travel messages work?

Good messages are specific. They say where, when, roughly how much and how to book. Examples with placeholders (match them to your registered template):

  • Package launch: "[Agency]: [Destination] [N]-night family package, departures from [date]. Details and booking: [link or number]."
  • Early-booking reminder: "Planning for the holidays? Seats for [destination] departures on [date] are filling. Call [number]."
  • Itinerary share: "Your [destination] itinerary is ready. See it here: [link]."
  • Pre-departure info: "Your trip starts on [date]. Reporting time: [time], place: [place]. Contact: [number]."
  • Post-trip: "Thank you for travelling with [Agency]. Share your feedback: [link]."

The pre-departure and itinerary messages are service messages for existing customers, which is a different category from promotions. Check with your provider how each template is classified.

How do WhatsApp and SMS divide the work?

SMS gives dates and numbers. WhatsApp shows the destination: photos, itineraries and a place to ask questions. Use WhatsApp only with people who opted in, and use approved templates when you start the chat, as Meta's policy requires. A common flow is an SMS with the package headline and a number, then a WhatsApp conversation once the customer replies.

For travel businesses that serve many cities, you can also sort numbers by departure city and send the right pick-up point to the right group.

How do you avoid overselling?

Only advertise what you can deliver. If a package has limited seats, say how many, truthfully. If a price is "starting from", say what it includes. Do not use fake countdowns. Travellers remember a bad surprise at the airport longer than a good discount.

Also keep your rules straight on cancellations and refunds, and state the key ones. A message that links to the terms builds trust, and it also protects you.

A worked example (hypothetical)

A small tour company has 2,400 past customers and enquirers. This is an invented example. Six weeks before the summer holidays it sends an SMS about a hill-station family package to 900 of them who travelled with children before. A second SMS, two weeks later, goes only to the people who clicked or replied. The team calls everyone who asked about prices. It leaves the other 1,500 numbers for different packages: a pilgrimage tour for senior customers, a weekend break for couples. Each group hears about one thing, and the company sees which package brings which enquiry.

Common mistakes in travel season marketing

  • Starting at the peak. Families have booked by then.
  • Sending every package to everyone. Group by what each customer wanted.
  • Hiding the price basis. Say what "starting from" includes.
  • Fake scarcity. Seats left should be true.
  • Not sending service messages. Pre-departure details matter as much as promotion.
  • Buying lists. You cannot show consent.
  • Ignoring opt-outs. A customer who says stop should not hear from you on the next campaign.

When the season ends, think about the quiet months. Our guide to off season travel marketing covers that, and the guide to wedding season marketing SMS has ideas for vendors who sell honeymoon and destination packages.

Frequently asked questions

How early should a travel agency send holiday package SMS?

Earlier than the trip, by as many weeks as your customers usually plan ahead. Check your own booking history to see when summer or festival enquiries came in last year, and plan your first message a little before that.

Can a travel company send bulk SMS to past customers?

Yes, through a registered sender and approved templates. Promotional messages need an opt-out, and you should keep the record of how each number was collected. Service messages about a booked trip are a separate category.

Should I include a price in a travel SMS?

If you can, include a starting price and say what it covers. It filters out people who cannot afford the trip and saves your sales team time. Keep the price accurate and the conditions clear.

Is WhatsApp better than SMS for travel packages?

For showing images and itineraries, yes, but only for people who opted in. SMS reaches more people and works for short facts. Many agencies use SMS for the first message and WhatsApp for the conversation.

How do I handle cancellations in messages?

Link to the terms and state the main points in plain words. If something changes for a booked trip, tell affected customers as soon as you can, in a clear service message that names the change and the next step.
